What is Zcash (ZEC)?

Zcash is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency built around one idea: payments should be private by choice. Launched in 2016 from an academic project, it pioneered the production use of zk-SNARKs — zero-knowledge proofs that let the network verify a transaction is valid without revealing the sender, receiver or amount.

In its economics, Zcash deliberately mirrors Bitcoin: a hard cap of 21 million coins, mining-based issuance, and periodic halvings. The difference is what the chain records — Zcash lets you decide how much of your financial life becomes public.

Shielded vs transparent: two kinds of ZEC addresses

Zcash runs two address types side by side. Transparent addresses (starting with “t”) behave like Bitcoin’s — every transaction is visible on the public ledger. Shielded addresses (“z”, and unified addresses that wrap them) use zero-knowledge proofs to encrypt the details while the network still verifies correctness.

This optionality is Zcash’s pragmatic edge: exchanges and services that need auditability use transparent addresses, while users who want privacy can shield their funds. Swap routes on CryptoRoute normally settle to standard transparent addresses — check the widget’s address guidance for what your route supports, and shield funds afterwards from your own wallet if privacy is the goal.

How Zcash works under the hood

Miners secure Zcash with proof-of-work, producing blocks roughly every 75 seconds. Finality is probabilistic, Bitcoin-style: deposits gain security with each confirmation, so a ZEC leg of a swap takes minutes while confirmations accumulate rather than settling instantly. It is the same conservative security model Bitcoin uses, with faster blocks.

Development is stewarded by the Electric Coin Company and the Zcash Foundation, funded through a protocol-level development fund — an unusual arrangement that has kept cutting-edge cryptography shipping on a public chain for nearly a decade.

The proving technology has also matured dramatically. Early shielded transactions demanded serious computing power; successive upgrades cut proof generation to something a phone handles comfortably, and unified addresses now hide the transparent-versus-shielded plumbing from everyday users. The cryptography got easier to use without getting weaker.

ZEC is single-chain — swap it cross-chain in one step

ZEC lives natively on the Zcash network, and that is where CryptoRoute routes it — real coins, not wrapped derivatives. Historically, moving between ZEC and other ecosystems meant a custodial exchange, which for a privacy asset is a particularly awkward middleman: the account that trades your ZEC also keeps a permanent record of you doing it.

Intent-based settlement removes it. Declare the outcome — ZEC in, BTC or a stablecoin out — and solvers on NEAR Intents fill it as one atomic operation, delivering the destination asset natively on its own chain or refunding you if the swap cannot complete.

The directions people actually travel: into ZEC to hold an asset whose privacy guarantees are protocol-level rather than promised, and out of ZEC into Bitcoin or a stablecoin when it is time to spend or settle. Both trips work without an exchange account on either end.

Why swap ZEC non-custodially on CryptoRoute

A privacy coin held by a custodian is a contradiction. CryptoRoute holds nothing: no account, no KYC checkpoint, no platform balance. You send ZEC from your own wallet, settlement happens on-chain, and the swapped asset arrives at an address you control — with every leg verifiable in a block explorer. Atomic settlement means there is no intermediate state to trust: the swap fills at the quoted terms or your funds come back to your refund address.

Privacy tools come with responsibility, so this deserves its own sentence: swapping without KYC does not exempt you from the tax, reporting and legal obligations that apply in your own jurisdiction.
