What is Arbitrum?

Arbitrum is one of the largest Ethereum Layer 2s by value locked — an optimistic rollup that executes transactions on its own high-speed environment and posts compressed results back to Ethereum, borrowing mainnet’s security rather than building its own from scratch. The flagship network, Arbitrum One, was developed by Offchain Labs and is now governed by the Arbitrum DAO.

It earned its position the unglamorous way: launching early, running its Nitro engine reliably, and accumulating one of the deepest DeFi ecosystems of any L2. If mainnet is Ethereum’s courtroom, Arbitrum is its trading floor.

Fees and finality: the rollup experience

Transactions on Arbitrum confirm in seconds and cost a small fraction of an equivalent transaction on Ethereum mainnet, because hundreds of them share the cost of a single batch posted to Ethereum. In a cross-chain swap, the Arbitrum leg is rarely the slow part.

Two timescales are worth keeping apart. The soft confirmation you see in your wallet arrives near-instantly, when the sequencer accepts the transaction; hard finality follows once the batch containing it is posted to Ethereum and settles there. For a swap payout, the first is what you experience — the second is the guarantee working quietly underneath.

The optimistic design has one visible seam: exiting through the canonical bridge means waiting out a challenge window of up to a week. Most users never see it — third-party routes fill the gap — and an intent-based swap avoids the queue entirely by delivering value natively on the destination chain instead of unwinding a bridge position.

Addresses and tokens: EVM rules apply

Arbitrum speaks fluent EVM. Addresses are the standard “0x” plus 40 hexadecimal characters, identical in format to Ethereum mainnet, Base and BNB Chain — and the same address exists on all of them, with entirely separate balances on each. Tokens follow the ERC-20 standard; gas is paid in ETH, not a separate token.

No memos or destination tags exist anywhere in this system: the address, on the correct network, is the complete destination. The widget validates the format before any funds move — and the network selection, not the address field, is the part that deserves your double-check every time.

Native USDC on Arbitrum — and the USDC.e leftover

The asset we route on Arbitrum is USDC, issued natively on the chain by Circle. Arbitrum also still carries USDC.e, an older bridged representation from before native issuance existed. They usually trade at par, but they are different tokens with different contract addresses, and some venues accept only the native issue.

CryptoRoute payouts on Arbitrum deliver native USDC. For the asset’s own story — reserves, the peg, the issuer — see the USDC hub; the widget’s selector always shows the live list of what we route on this network.

On and off Arbitrum in one step

The old paths onto Arbitrum were a bridge from mainnet or an exchange withdrawal; the old paths off were the same in reverse. NEAR Intents replaces them with a declaration: BTC in, USDC on Arbitrum out — or USDC on Arbitrum in, SOL out — filled by competing solvers as one atomic operation, each leg an ordinary transaction you can verify in a block explorer.

No exchange account, no platform balance, payout straight to the wallet you choose; a swap that cannot fill refunds to the address set at creation. To receive tokens you need no ETH at all — though moving them onward later takes a little ETH on Arbitrum for gas. A note on compliance: swapping without KYC does not exempt you from the tax and reporting rules of your jurisdiction.
