How to swap crypto safely: a step-by-step guide

By CryptoRoute Research · 업데이트 2026-06-17

Swapping crypto is straightforward, but a few habits prevent almost every costly mistake. Here's a practical checklist.

1. Match the network on both sides

The single most important rule: the asset you send and the address you send to must be on the same network. "USDC" on Solana and "USDC" on Base are different on-chain assets. Always read the network label, not just the ticker.

2. Verify the address format

Each network has a recognisable address format — Bitcoin (bc1…/1…/3…), Ethereum and other EVM chains (0x…), Tron (T…), Solana (base58). A good swap tool validates this for you before showing a deposit address. If an address doesn't match the expected format, stop.

3. Provide a refund address

For cross-chain swaps, a refund address on the origin network is required so funds can be returned if a route can't complete. Use a wallet you control.

4. Send the exact amount

Send the quoted amount of the origin asset to the deposit address. Sending a different amount can trigger a refund or partial fill.

5. Test with a small amount

For a new route, a new wallet, or your first time, send a small test amount first. Once it lands, repeat with the full amount.

6. Keep your details

Save the deposit address and your transaction hash until the swap completes. If anything stalls, that information lets support help you.

CryptoRoute builds these checks in — explicit networks, per-network address validation, a required refund address for cross-chain routes, and a live status page you can return to.
