USDT TRC20 vs ERC20: which network should you use?
By CryptoRoute Research · 업데이트 2026-06-17
"USDT" isn't a single thing — it's the same token (Tether USD) issued across many networks. The two you'll meet most often are TRC20 (USDT on the Tron network) and ERC20 (USDT on Ethereum). They share a price and a name, but they are not interchangeable: USDT sent on Tron can only be received on a Tron address, and USDT on Ethereum only on an Ethereum address.
The practical differences
- Fees. TRC20 transfers are typically a few cents (or free, depending on your wallet's energy). ERC20 transfers pay Ethereum gas, which can range from cents to several dollars when the network is busy.
- Speed. Both usually confirm within a minute or two. Ethereum can slow down under load.
- Support. ERC20 has the widest DeFi and exchange support. TRC20 is extremely popular for transfers and remittances because it's cheap.
How to avoid the classic mistake
The most expensive mistake is sending USDT on the wrong network — e.g. sending TRC20 USDT to an ERC20 (0x…) address. Funds sent to an address on a network it doesn't belong to are usually unrecoverable.
Before you send:
- Check the network shown next to the asset, not just the symbol.
- Confirm the address format matches (Tron addresses start with
T; Ethereum addresses start with0x). - On a new route, test with a small amount first.
When you swap on CryptoRoute, the network is shown explicitly on both sides and your address is validated against it before you ever see a deposit address.
