What is Zcash (ZEC)?

Zcash is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency built around one idea: payments should be private by choice. Launched in 2016 from an academic project, it pioneered the production use of zk-SNARKs — zero-knowledge proofs that let the network verify a transaction is valid without revealing the sender, receiver or amount.

In its economics, Zcash deliberately mirrors Bitcoin: a hard cap of 21 million coins, mining-based issuance, and periodic halvings. The difference is what the chain records — Zcash lets you decide how much of your financial life becomes public.

Shielded vs transparent: two kinds of ZEC addresses

Zcash runs two address types side by side. Transparent addresses (starting with “t”) behave like Bitcoin’s — every transaction is visible on the public ledger. Shielded addresses (“z”, and unified addresses that wrap them) use zero-knowledge proofs to encrypt the details while the network still verifies correctness.

This optionality is Zcash’s pragmatic edge: exchanges and services that need auditability use transparent addresses, while users who want privacy can shield their funds. How Zcash works under the hood

Miners secure Zcash with proof-of-work, producing blocks roughly every 75 seconds. Finality is probabilistic, Bitcoin-style: deposits gain security with each confirmation, so a ZEC leg of a swap takes minutes while confirmations accumulate rather than settling instantly. It is the same conservative security model Bitcoin uses, with faster blocks.

Development is stewarded by the Electric Coin Company and the Zcash Foundation, funded through a protocol-level development fund — an unusual arrangement that has kept cutting-edge cryptography shipping on a public chain for nearly a decade.

The proving technology has also matured dramatically. Early shielded transactions demanded serious computing power; successive upgrades cut proof generation to something a phone handles comfortably, and unified addresses now hide the transparent-versus-shielded plumbing from everyday users. The cryptography got easier to use without getting weaker.

ZEC is single-chain — swap it cross-chain in one step
