What is Dogecoin (DOGE)?

Dogecoin started in 2013 as a joke — a fork of Bitcoin-family code fronted by a Shiba Inu meme — and outlived nearly everything launched alongside it. Under the humour sits a straightforward proof-of-work payments coin: fast-ish blocks, low fees, and a community that has funded everything from sports sponsorships to charity water wells.

DOGE has no supply cap. New coins are issued at a fixed rate with every block, a deliberate design choice that keeps fees low and encourages spending over hoarding. In concrete terms, each new block mints 10,000 DOGE — roughly five billion coins a year — so the float grows on a fixed, predictable schedule. That steady issuance makes Dogecoin inflationary in absolute terms, though the inflation rate declines each year as the base grows.

How Dogecoin works: merged mining with Litecoin

Dogecoin uses the Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm and one-minute block times. Since 2014 it has been merge-mined with Litecoin: miners securing Litecoin can simultaneously secure Dogecoin at no extra energy cost, which gives DOGE far more hash power — and thus more security — than a meme coin would otherwise attract.

Like Bitcoin, finality is probabilistic: a transaction becomes safer with each block mined on top of it. Services typically wait for multiple confirmations on meaningful amounts, which is why the Dogecoin leg of a swap takes minutes rather than seconds.

The one-minute block time is not just a novelty. Compared with Bitcoin’s ten-minute cadence, it means confirmations accumulate an order of magnitude faster, which historically made DOGE a practical choice for tipping, micro-payments and shuffling value between venues without the fee anxiety of busier chains.

DOGE is single-chain — swapping it cross-chain used to be the hard part

Dogecoin lives on its own network, and that is where CryptoRoute routes it: native DOGE, not a wrapped derivative on some other chain. Wrapped DOGE exists in various ecosystems, but each wrapper adds a custodian or bridge you have to trust.

Intent-based settlement makes the native path practical. Declare what you want — DOGE in, BTC or USDT or SOL out — and solvers on NEAR Intents fill it in one atomic step. The destination asset arrives natively on its own chain, and if the swap cannot be filled, funds return to your refund address.

Why swap DOGE non-custodially on CryptoRoute

Meme coin or not, DOGE is money to the person holding it — and custody risk applies just the same. CryptoRoute takes none of it: no account to open, no KYC to pass, no deposit balance we hold while you wait. You send from your wallet; the swap settles on-chain; the payout lands at your address.

Both legs of the trade are ordinary public transactions you can verify in a block explorer, which is more than any custodial exchange can show you. One sentence worth keeping: no-KYC swapping does not exempt you from the tax and reporting rules of your own jurisdiction.

Practical notes for sending DOGE

Dogecoin addresses usually start with “D” — the widget validates the format before anything moves. Send only native DOGE on the Dogecoin network to a swap deposit address; exchange-internal balances or wrapped versions on other chains will not arrive.

Fees on the Dogecoin network are low, but your wallet sets the miner fee for the deposit transaction — a reasonable fee keeps confirmation times predictable, which keeps your swap on schedule.

Common directions people take: DOGE into BTC or a stablecoin to lock in value after a run, or the reverse — a stablecoin into DOGE — to hold the asset without leaving dollars idle on an exchange. Either way the swap arrives in a wallet you control, ready to move again whenever you are.
