What is Ethereum (ETH)?

Ethereum is the largest smart-contract blockchain — a shared, programmable settlement layer where applications from stablecoins to lending markets run as code that nobody can unilaterally switch off. ETH (Ether) is its native asset: it pays for computation (“gas”), secures the network through staking, and serves as the base collateral of decentralized finance.

Since its 2022 switch to proof-of-stake, Ethereum is secured by validators who lock up ETH rather than by miners burning energy. A portion of every transaction fee is burned, tying ETH’s supply dynamics directly to how much the network is used.

How Ethereum works: gas, staking and finality

Every action on Ethereum — a transfer, a swap, a contract call — consumes gas priced in ETH. Validators propose and attest to blocks roughly every twelve seconds, and finality is reached within minutes, after which transactions are irreversible without slashing a large share of all staked ETH.

Gas costs on mainnet fluctuate with demand. That variability is the main thing to know when timing an ETH transaction: the protocol is the same at 3am on Sunday as during a market frenzy, but the fee to use it is not.

ETH on mainnet and Layer 2: Base, Arbitrum and beyond

ETH no longer lives only on Ethereum mainnet. Layer 2 networks such as Base, Arbitrum and Optimism inherit Ethereum’s security while executing transactions off-chain, cutting fees to cents and confirmation times to seconds — and ETH is the gas asset on those networks too. The same coin, several places to hold and spend it.

Which layer you want depends on the job: mainnet for maximum-security settlement and deep DeFi liquidity, an L2 like Base for cheap, fast everyday activity. CryptoRoute routes ETH on supported networks — Base among them — and the widget’s chain selector always shows the live list you can actually swap on.

Moving ETH between layers has its own friction worth knowing: an official withdrawal from an optimistic rollup back to mainnet can take up to a week, which is why most users rely on third-party routes instead. A swap that simply delivers ETH — or any other asset — where you need it sidesteps that waiting game entirely.

Swapping ETH cross-chain without bridges

Moving between ETH and assets on non-EVM chains used to mean either a custodial exchange or a chain of bridge transactions, each with its own contract risk. Intent-based settlement replaces that: you declare the outcome — ETH in, BTC or SOL or a stablecoin out — and solvers on NEAR Intents compete to fill it in one atomic step.

No wrapped ETH is minted for you, nothing sits locked in a bridge, and the payout arrives natively on the destination chain at an address you chose.

Why swap ETH non-custodially on CryptoRoute

CryptoRoute holds nothing for you — there is no deposit balance, no account, and no KYC checkpoint. You send ETH from a wallet you control; the swap settles on-chain; the output lands at your address. If a swap cannot be filled, funds return to your refund address — set on every cross-chain swap you create.

People swap into ETH for concrete reasons: gas to operate on Ethereum or its L2s, collateral for DeFi, staking exposure, or simply the base asset of the largest smart-contract economy. Whatever the reason, coins that land in your own wallet are immediately usable — no withdrawal request, no queue.

Both legs of the trade are ordinary blockchain transactions you can verify in an explorer — a proof trail a custodial exchange cannot offer. Worth saying once and clearly: skipping KYC does not exempt you from the tax and reporting rules that apply in your jurisdiction.

How to swap ETH

  1. 1Pick your pairChoose ETH and its network as what you send, then the asset you want to receive.
  2. 2Enter your wallet addressNo exchange account, no platform balance — the payout goes straight to the wallet address you choose.
  3. 3Review the live rate and confirmSee the exact quote and fee before you send anything.
  4. 4Receive and verify on-chainYour ETH swap settles on-chain — verify the transaction on the explorer.
