What is Litecoin (LTC)?

Litecoin is one of the earliest Bitcoin alternatives, live since 2011 and rarely offline since. Created by Charlie Lee as the “silver to Bitcoin’s gold”, it shares Bitcoin’s core design — proof-of-work, a hard supply cap (84 million LTC), halving cycles — but runs four times faster, with blocks every two and a half minutes.

That longevity is Litecoin’s quiet superpower. It has survived every market cycle since 2011 without a major protocol failure, which is why it remains a default payment coin on merchants, exchanges and payment processors worldwide.

How Litecoin works: Scrypt proof-of-work

Litecoin miners secure the network using the Scrypt hashing algorithm — a deliberate departure from Bitcoin’s SHA-256 that originally aimed to resist specialized mining hardware. Dedicated Scrypt hardware arrived anyway, and today Litecoin’s hashpower does double duty through merged mining: the same proof-of-work that secures Litecoin also secures Dogecoin.

Like Bitcoin, Litecoin finality is probabilistic. Deposits gain security with each confirmation, so services wait for several blocks before treating a payment as settled — faster than Bitcoin thanks to the shorter block time, but still minutes rather than seconds.

Fees, speed and where LTC fits

Litecoin transactions typically cost a few cents and confirm quickly, which keeps LTC relevant as an actual medium of exchange rather than only a trading asset. For moving value between venues, it has long been a favourite: cheaper than Bitcoin, more widely listed than most newer chains.

Litecoin has also historically served as Bitcoin’s proving ground. SegWit activated on Litecoin before Bitcoin adopted it, and the network’s willingness to test upgrades first — while keeping the same conservative monetary policy of capped supply and scheduled halvings — is a large part of why it still commands trust after well over a decade.

Litecoin also offers MWEB, an opt-in privacy feature. Note that swap routes use standard transparent addresses — if your wallet holds coins in MWEB, move them to a regular address before swapping.

LTC is single-chain — swap it cross-chain in one step

Litecoin lives on its own network, and CryptoRoute routes it there as the native asset — no wrapped LTC, no bridge IOUs. Getting from LTC into Bitcoin, Solana or a stablecoin used to require a custodial exchange with KYC in the middle.

With intent-based settlement, you declare the outcome — LTC in, BTC out, for instance — and solvers on NEAR Intents fill it as one atomic operation. You receive the destination asset natively on its own chain, or your funds return to your refund address if the swap cannot complete. One send, one payout, and a public transaction trail for both — nothing parked with an intermediary in between.

Why swap LTC non-custodially on CryptoRoute

CryptoRoute never holds your coins. There is no account to create, no KYC to pass, and no deposit balance sitting with us mid-trade — you send LTC from your own wallet and the swapped asset arrives at an address you chose. Both legs are ordinary public transactions you can verify in a block explorer.

A note on addresses: Litecoin uses several formats — legacy addresses starting with L, script addresses with M, and native SegWit addresses with ltc1. All are valid destinations, and the widget checks the format before your swap begins, so a typo is caught before it can cost anything.

That model removes the failure mode that has cost crypto users the most over the years: a custodian freezing, losing or misusing customer funds. The obligatory caveat, once: swapping without KYC does not exempt you from the tax and reporting rules of your own jurisdiction.
