What is BNB Chain?

BNB Chain — historically the BNB Smart Chain, or BSC — is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 that emerged from the Binance ecosystem and grew into one of the most heavily used networks in crypto. A compact set of validators, selected by stake, produces blocks in quick succession under a consensus design the chain calls Proof of Staked Authority.

The trade is explicit: fewer validators than Ethereum, in exchange for consistently fast, cheap blocks. For the retail flows that dominate the chain — token transfers, small trades, stablecoin payments — that trade has proven exactly what the audience wanted.

Fees and speed on BNB Chain in practice

Blocks land in about a second or less, and an ordinary transfer costs a small fraction of what Ethereum mainnet charges — cheap enough that fees rarely factor into a decision. The network’s 2025 Maxwell hard fork cut block intervals to roughly 0.75 seconds. In a cross-chain swap, the BNB Chain leg usually confirms within seconds to a minute, and finality follows a few blocks behind.

Gas is paid in BNB, the network’s native asset. Receiving a swap payout needs no BNB at all; moving tokens onward later needs a little, held in the same wallet. As with every route we offer, network costs on both legs are already included in the quote.

BEP-20: the token standard behind the initials

BEP-20 is BNB Chain’s fungible-token standard — functionally the ERC-20 pattern transplanted onto this network. The initials matter mostly as a network label: “USDT BEP-20” means USDT travelling on BNB Chain, distinct from the same asset’s deployments on Tron or Ethereum.

Those deployments cannot reach each other directly. A BEP-20 token sent to an address that is only watched on another network will not arrive, which makes the network selector — not the address field — the step that deserves the double-check.

Addresses on BNB Chain: 0x, like every EVM network

BNB Chain uses standard EVM addresses — “0x” plus 40 hexadecimal characters — so the address you use on Ethereum works here unchanged, with separate balances per network. No memos or destination tags exist on this chain; the address on the right network is the complete destination.

The widget validates the format before anything moves. One historical footnote: the old Beacon Chain with its “bnb1…” addresses has been retired — the BNB Chain we route is the EVM one.
