What is Toncoin (TON)?

Toncoin is the native asset of The Open Network (TON), a proof-of-stake blockchain originally designed by Telegram’s engineers and later handed to an open community when regulators blocked Telegram’s own launch. TON pays for transactions, secures the network through validator staking, and powers a growing ecosystem of payments, mini-apps and games.

TON’s distinguishing asset is distribution: deep integration with Telegram puts a crypto wallet within reach of a very large messaging audience, which has made TON one of the few chains with a genuinely consumer-shaped user base.

How TON works: sharding for scale

TON is built around dynamic sharding — the network can split its workload across many parallel chains and merge them back as demand changes, all settling into a single masterchain. Blocks confirm in a few seconds and fees stay low, which suits the small, frequent transactions of a messaging-first ecosystem.

Validators stake TON to produce blocks and are penalized for misbehaviour, the standard proof-of-stake bargain. Holders who do not run validator infrastructure can still take part by delegating TON through nominator pools and earning a share of the block rewards. For everyday users the visible result is simple: fast transfers that cost very little.

The token ecosystem on TON runs on jettons — the network’s fungible-token standard — with dollar stablecoins among the most used. That means TON increasingly functions the way gas assets do elsewhere: the coin you hold to move everything else on the chain.

The memo question: sending TON correctly

One practical quirk matters when moving TON: some deposits require a memo (comment) attached to the transaction so the recipient can attribute it. Exchanges commonly require one; self-custody wallets usually do not. Sending without a required memo is a recoverable but painful mistake.

CryptoRoute flags this in the widget — only include a memo when the route explicitly asks for it, and always double-check what your destination expects before sending.

Also worth knowing: Telegram’s built-in Wallet is custodial, while TON Space and apps like Tonkeeper are self-custody. For a non-custodial swap, send from a wallet whose keys you actually hold — otherwise the custodian, not you, controls the transaction.

TON is single-chain — swap it cross-chain in one step

Toncoin lives natively on one network: TON. On CryptoRoute it is routed there, as the real asset — no wrapped stand-ins. Getting from TON into Bitcoin, Solana or a stablecoin used to mean a custodial exchange in the middle; intent-based settlement removes that stop.

You state the outcome — TON in, USDT on Tron out, for example — and solvers on NEAR Intents fill it as one atomic operation. The payout arrives natively on the destination chain, and if the swap cannot be filled, your funds return to the refund address you set. One deposit, one payout, and no wrapped token or bridge balance ever created in your name.

Why swap TON non-custodially on CryptoRoute

No account, no KYC, no deposit balance: you send TON from a wallet you control and receive the swapped asset at an address you chose. Nothing of yours is ever parked with us, so there is nothing to freeze, withhold or lose in a platform failure.

Every leg of the swap is an ordinary public transaction you can verify in a TON explorer such as Tonviewer or Tonscan — on-chain proof rather than a promise. Compare that with the custodial route: deposit to an exchange, pass KYC, trade, then queue for a withdrawal that is ultimately at the operator’s discretion. The non-custodial version has fewer steps and, more importantly, fewer parties who can say no.

One caveat, stated once: no-KYC swapping does not exempt you from the tax and reporting rules of your own jurisdiction.
