What is USDT (Tether)?

USDT is a US-dollar stablecoin issued by Tether. Each token is designed to trade at one dollar, backed by a reserve portfolio that Tether reports in periodic attestations — predominantly cash and cash-equivalent assets such as short-term US Treasury bills. It is the most widely traded stablecoin in crypto and the default quote currency on many exchanges.

Unlike Bitcoin or Ether, USDT is not mined and has no fixed supply. Tether mints new tokens when institutions deposit dollars and burns them when tokens are redeemed. That issue-and-redeem loop is what holds the price near $1.

How the USDT peg holds

The peg is maintained by arbitrage. If USDT trades below a dollar, authorized participants can buy it cheaply and redeem it with Tether for a full dollar, pocketing the difference and pushing the price back up. If it trades above a dollar, they mint new tokens at $1 and sell into the premium.

This mechanism has kept USDT close to its peg through most market conditions, though brief deviations happen during periods of stress. The token’s value ultimately depends on Tether’s reserves and its ability to honour redemptions — which is why reserve transparency is the recurring debate around USDT.

USDT on Tron vs Ethereum: one token, many networks

USDT is not a blockchain — it is a token deployed on many of them. The same dollar-pegged asset exists as TRC-20 on Tron, ERC-20 on Ethereum, BEP-20 on BNB Chain, and in bridged form on newer networks like Base. The balance is interchangeable in value, but the networks are not interchangeable in practice.

Tron’s TRC-20 USDT dominates retail transfers and remittances because fees are low and blocks confirm in seconds. Ethereum’s ERC-20 version carries the deepest DeFi liquidity but pays mainnet gas for every move. BEP-20 and Base sit in between: cheap, fast, and increasingly liquid. Sending USDT on the wrong network to an address that only supports another one is the classic way funds get stuck — the network matters as much as the address.

Which USDT network should you use?

For plain transfers, pick the cheapest chain both sides support — that is usually Tron. For DeFi, use the chain where the protocol you need lives. For exchange deposits, always match the network the exchange lists for USDT deposits, exactly.

On CryptoRoute you don’t have to pre-position funds on the “right” chain first. The widget’s chain selector shows every USDT network we currently route — Tron (TRC-20), BNB Chain (BEP-20) and Base among them — and you can swap from USDT on one chain straight to an asset on another in a single step.

Why swap USDT non-custodially on CryptoRoute

Most swap services take custody of your USDT while they work: you deposit to their wallet, they trade, and you hope the withdrawal arrives. CryptoRoute never holds your funds. You send from your own wallet, the swap is settled on-chain through NEAR Intents, and the output lands directly at the address you chose. There is no account to create and no KYC gate before you can trade.

The intent-based design also removes classic bridge risk. Instead of locking your USDT in a bridge contract and minting a wrapped copy, solvers compete to fill your swap and settlement happens atomically — you either receive the quoted asset or your funds are returned to your refund address. Every leg is a real transaction you can verify in a block explorer.

One caveat worth stating plainly: swapping without KYC does not exempt you from the tax and reporting rules of your own jurisdiction — those obligations remain yours.
