What is Bitcoin (BTC)?
Bitcoin is the first and largest cryptocurrency — a peer-to-peer monetary network launched in 2009 with no company, foundation or issuer behind it. BTC is its native asset: hard-capped at 21 million coins, issued on a fixed schedule that halves roughly every four years, and secured by more computational power than any other blockchain.
Bitcoin’s design goal is simple and narrow: let anyone hold and transfer value without needing permission from a bank or government. Everything about the protocol — proof-of-work mining, ten-minute blocks, the conservative pace of change — serves that goal.
How Bitcoin works: proof-of-work and confirmations
Miners compete to bundle transactions into blocks by expending energy on cryptographic puzzles; the chain with the most accumulated work is the valid one. Rewriting history would require redoing that work faster than the entire honest network, which is what makes settled Bitcoin transactions effectively final.
Finality is probabilistic, though. A transaction gains security with each block built on top of it, which is why recipients — CryptoRoute included — wait for multiple confirmations on larger amounts. Expect a Bitcoin leg of any swap to take longer than legs on fast-finality chains; that is the cost of the strongest settlement assurances in crypto.
Fees on Bitcoin are a market, not a constant. Transactions bid for limited block space, so the same transfer can cost very little on a quiet weekend and considerably more during a mempool rush. Your wallet sets the fee on a swap deposit — pay a competitive rate and the deposit confirms on schedule; lowball it and the whole swap simply waits.
Native BTC vs wrapped BTC
Because Bitcoin has no smart contracts in the DeFi sense, most “BTC” in other ecosystems is wrapped: a token like WBTC minted against coins locked with a custodian or bridge. Wrapped BTC inherits the custodian’s risk — if the bridge is exploited or the custodian fails, the wrapper can depeg from real BTC.
On CryptoRoute you trade native BTC on the Bitcoin network itself. When you swap BTC for an asset on another chain, intent-based settlement exchanges the real coins for the real destination asset — no wrapper is minted on your behalf and nothing of yours sits locked in a bridge contract.
Swapping BTC cross-chain without a bridge
Historically, getting from BTC into another ecosystem meant a custodial exchange (deposit, KYC, trade, withdraw) or a wrap-and-bridge pipeline with several failure points. NEAR Intents collapses that into one step: you state the outcome you want — say, BTC in, USDC on Solana out — and competing solvers fill it, with atomic settlement guaranteeing you either receive the quoted asset or get refunded.
The practical upshot: one transaction from your Bitcoin wallet, one payout to your destination address, and a verifiable on-chain trail for both.
Why swap BTC non-custodially on CryptoRoute
The history of crypto’s biggest losses is a history of custodians — exchanges that failed, froze withdrawals, or vanished with customer coins. Self-custody exists precisely to make that class of failure impossible, and a swap should not be the moment you give it up.
“Not your keys, not your coins” started as a Bitcoin maxim, and it applies to swapping too. CryptoRoute never takes custody: there is no deposit account, no platform balance, and no sign-up. You send BTC from your wallet, and the asset you bought arrives at an address you chose — with no KYC gate in between.
Every swap is verifiable in a block explorer from the first satoshi to the final payout, and failed swaps refund to the address you set when creating them. One sentence of small print that matters: trading without KYC does not exempt you from the tax and reporting obligations of your own jurisdiction.
