What is the Ethereum network?
Ethereum is the settlement layer much of crypto is built on: a proof-of-stake blockchain run by hundreds of thousands of validators worldwide, with no company in charge and no off switch. It introduced the general-purpose smart contract, and with it the pattern nearly every other network now copies — programmable tokens, on-chain exchanges, lending, naming, identity.
Mainnet’s role today is the high-security tier. Layer 2 networks such as Base and Arbitrum execute the everyday traffic cheaply and post their results back here, which makes Ethereum less a competitor to those chains than the ground they stand on.
Fees and speed on mainnet: what to expect
Blocks arrive roughly every twelve seconds, and finality — the point where a transaction is irreversible — lands within minutes. In a cross-chain swap, an Ethereum leg is quick but not instant: faster than Bitcoin’s confirmations, slower than the sub-second chains.
Costs are the variable to respect. Gas on mainnet is an auction for scarce block space, so an identical transfer can be cheap on a quiet Sunday and expensive during a busy market — that variability, not the absolute number, is the planning fact. Whatever gas costs at the moment of your swap, the network costs on both legs are already included in the quote you see.
ERC-20 and the 0x address: the standards everyone copied
ERC-20 is Ethereum’s fungible-token standard — the original of which TRC-20 and BEP-20 are ports. Tokens are contracts on the chain, and your wallet balance is an entry in them; nothing about a token exists off Ethereum unless a separate deployment is made on another network.
Addresses are “0x” plus 40 hexadecimal characters, shared in format — and in your keys — with every EVM network. The same address on Base or Arbitrum is a different account book: funds live on the network they were sent on. Mixed capitalization in an address is a built-in checksum, no memos or tags are ever used, and the widget validates the format before any funds move.
Mainnet or an L2? A practical rule
Choose mainnet when the destination demands it — a protocol that only lives there, a counterparty that only watches it, or a large transfer where you want Ethereum’s full security directly underneath. Choose an L2 when the job is everyday movement and cost matters more than pedigree.
The useful part of intent-based routing is that this decision is just a selector. The widget shows the live list of assets we currently route on Ethereum mainnet alongside the L2s we support, and a swap delivers directly to whichever network you pick — no bridge planning required.
Gas to receive vs gas to spend
Receiving a swap payout on Ethereum requires no ETH at all — an empty address is a perfectly valid destination. Spending is the other half: moving a token onward later requires ETH on mainnet for gas, and mainnet gas deserves a bigger buffer than the pennies an L2 needs.
On and off Ethereum in one step
Between Ethereum and non-EVM ecosystems, the old paths were a custodial exchange or a chain of bridge and wrap transactions. NEAR Intents replaces them with a single declaration — BTC in, an Ethereum asset out, or the reverse — filled by competing solvers and settled atomically, with each leg an ordinary transaction you can verify on Etherscan or the destination chain’s explorer.
No exchange account, no platform balance, payout straight to the wallet you choose; a swap that cannot fill refunds to the address set at creation. One thing no swap changes: swapping without KYC does not exempt you from the tax and reporting rules of your own jurisdiction.
