What is XRP?
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), one of the oldest blockchains still in production, live since 2012. It was built for a specific job: moving value fast and cheaply, particularly across borders, where it serves as a neutral bridge asset between currencies. Ripple, the company most associated with XRP, builds payment infrastructure on the ledger but does not control it.
All XRP that will ever exist was created at launch — there is no mining and no ongoing issuance. A tiny amount is destroyed with every transaction as an anti-spam fee, making the supply very slightly deflationary over time. A large portion of Ripple’s own holdings sits in on-ledger escrow, released on a public schedule — one of the more transparent treasury arrangements among major assets.
How the XRP Ledger works: consensus without mining
The XRPL replaces mining with a consensus protocol: a network of independent validators agrees on the order and validity of transactions every few seconds. No energy-intensive puzzles, no block rewards — just rapid agreement among nodes that have no economic incentive to reorder history.
The result is settlement in three to five seconds at fees of a fraction of a cent, with finality that is immediate rather than probabilistic. For a payments-first asset, that profile is the whole point.
The ledger also carries more machinery than most people expect from a 2012-era chain: a built-in decentralized exchange, escrow, payment channels and token issuance are all native protocol features rather than smart-contract add-ons. XRP sits at the centre of all of it as the ledger’s fee and bridge asset.
Destination tags: the detail that matters
XRPL addresses are often shared — an exchange typically holds one address for all customers and tells them apart by a destination tag attached to each deposit. Sending to a tagged address without the tag is the most common way XRP deposits go astray.
CryptoRoute handles this explicitly: only use a destination tag when the route supports and requires one, and the widget tells you when that is the case. When receiving XRP to your own self-custody wallet, no tag is normally needed — the address alone identifies you, because nobody else shares it.
XRP is single-ledger — swap it cross-chain in one step
XRP lives natively on the XRP Ledger, and that is where CryptoRoute routes it — the real asset, not a wrapped derivative on some other chain. Historically, moving between XRP and other ecosystems meant a custodial exchange with KYC in the middle: deposit, verify, trade, withdraw, and hope every step cooperates.
Intent-based settlement removes that stop. Declare the outcome — XRP in, USDC on Solana out — and solvers on NEAR Intents fill it as one atomic operation. You either receive the quoted asset natively on its chain, or your funds return to your refund address. There is no in-between state where your XRP sits in a bridge contract or an operator’s hot wallet waiting for someone to press a button.
Why swap XRP non-custodially on CryptoRoute
No account, no KYC, no deposit balance. You send XRP from a wallet you control; the swap settles on-chain in seconds on the XRPL side; the output arrives at the address you specified. At no point do we hold your funds, so there is no platform balance that can be frozen, withheld or lost.
Every leg is publicly verifiable — the XRPL side in an explorer like XRPScan, the destination side on its own chain’s explorer. One line of small print that belongs here: swapping without KYC does not exempt you from the tax and reporting obligations of your jurisdiction.
