What is the XRP Ledger?
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is one of the oldest blockchains still in production, running continuously since 2012 — and it works unlike most of its peers. There is no mining and no staking: a network of independent validators, each following a list of peers it trusts not to collude, agrees on the order of transactions every few seconds. No energy auctions, no block rewards, just rapid consensus.
The design was aimed at payments from day one, and the ledger carries surprising machinery for its age: a built-in decentralized exchange, escrow and payment channels are protocol features, not smart-contract add-ons.
Speed and finality: settled means settled
An XRPL transaction settles in a handful of seconds, and its finality is deterministic — once a ledger closes, the result is final, with no confirmation-counting and no probabilistic hedging. That makes the XRPL leg of a swap one of the crispest experiences we route: sent, closed, done.
Fees are a tiny amount of XRP destroyed with each transaction as an anti-spam measure — negligible in practice, and unlike auction-style fee markets they barely move under load. On CryptoRoute swaps, the network costs of both legs are already included in the quote you see.
Destination tags: read this before sending
The XRPL’s one habit that regularly catches people: shared addresses. An exchange typically keeps a single XRP address for all customers and distinguishes deposits by a numeric destination tag. Send to a tagged address without the tag and the funds arrive — but nobody knows they are yours, and recovery means a manual support process.
The rule is simple. Deposits to exchanges and services: tag usually required. Payouts to your own self-custody wallet: no tag needed, because the address alone identifies you. XRP may require a destination tag on some routes — only use one where the route supports it, and the CryptoRoute widget makes that explicit before anything moves.
Addresses and the base reserve
XRPL addresses are base58 strings starting with “r”, typically 25–35 characters, and the widget validates the format before your swap begins. No token standard enters the picture on our routes: what travels here is XRP itself, the ledger’s native asset.
One protocol quirk to know: activating an XRPL account requires a small base reserve of XRP that stays locked while the account exists. Wallets handle this automatically, but it is why a first-ever payout to a brand-new address must clear that threshold, and why an XRPL account never drains fully to zero.
What CryptoRoute routes on the XRP Ledger
We route XRP, natively, on its own ledger — no wrapped derivatives on other chains. The widget’s selector always shows the live list for this network.
For XRP as an asset — its supply design, its role as a bridge currency — see the XRP hub. This page stays with the ledger: consensus, tags, reserves, and the ways on and off.
On and off the XRP Ledger in one step
Historically, XRP moved to and from other ecosystems through custodial exchanges — deposit, trade, withdraw, with an operator in the middle at every step. NEAR Intents replaces the pipeline with a declaration: BTC in, XRP out, or XRP in, USDC on Solana out, filled by competing solvers as one atomic operation with a public transaction trail on both chains.
No exchange account, no platform balance, payout straight to the wallet you choose; a swap that cannot fill refunds to the address set at creation. One line of small print: swapping without KYC does not exempt you from the tax and reporting rules of your own jurisdiction.
