What is Base?

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 — a network that executes transactions on its own fast rails and periodically posts the results back to Ethereum mainnet, inheriting its security. It is built on the open-source OP Stack and was incubated by Coinbase, which gave it something most young chains lack: an enormous on-ramp of existing users from day one.

Technically it is an optimistic rollup: transactions are assumed valid and finalized against Ethereum after a challenge window. For everyday use, what matters is simpler — Base feels like Ethereum with the costs and waiting removed.

Base vs Ethereum mainnet: fees and finality

On mainnet, every transfer bids for scarce block space; on Base, execution happens off-chain and only compressed transaction data hits Ethereum, so fees drop to a small fraction of mainnet costs and confirmations arrive in seconds. It is one of the cheaper, faster networks we route.

The trade-off hides in the exit. Withdrawing from an optimistic rollup through the canonical bridge means waiting out the challenge window — up to a week. That is precisely the friction a cross-chain swap sidesteps: the swap delivers value where you want it without you ever touching the bridge queue.

Same 0x address, different network

Base uses standard EVM addresses: “0x” followed by 40 hexadecimal characters, identical in format to Ethereum, Arbitrum and every other EVM chain. Your one address exists on all of them — but the balances do not. Funds sent on Base live on Base; the same address on mainnet shows nothing until something is sent there.

That is both the convenience and the trap of the EVM world. Tokens on Base follow the familiar ERC-20 standard, no memos or tags are ever needed, and the widget validates the address format before anything moves — but the network you select must match where the recipient is actually looking.

What CryptoRoute routes on Base

Base is one of our better-stocked networks: we route ETH — the chain’s gas asset, the same ether used on mainnet — along with USDC, issued natively on Base by Circle, and USDT. The widget’s selector always shows the current live list.

For the assets themselves — what ETH is, how the stablecoins hold their pegs — see the ETH, USDC and USDT hubs. This page is about the network they move on.

One practical note: gas on Base

Base has no separate gas token — fees are paid in ETH, just like mainnet, only far smaller. Receiving a swap payout needs no balance at all, but moving tokens onward later requires a sliver of ETH on Base specifically; ETH sitting on mainnet or another L2 does not count.

This is the most common stumble for newcomers to any L2: a wallet showing tokens it cannot move because the gas balance lives one network over. If your payout here is a token rather than ETH, consider topping up a little Base ETH in the same session.

On and off Base in one step

Moving value onto Base usually meant bridging from mainnet or withdrawing from an exchange; moving off meant the reverse, sometimes with that week-long exit. NEAR Intents replaces the whole pipeline: declare the outcome — BTC in, USDC on Base out, or ETH on Base in, SOL out — and solvers fill it as a single atomic operation, with both legs verifiable on-chain.

No exchange account, no platform balance, payout straight to the wallet you choose; unfilled swaps refund to the address set at creation. One sentence of small print: no-KYC swapping does not exempt you from the tax and reporting rules of your own jurisdiction.
