What is USDC (USD Coin)?

USDC is a US-dollar stablecoin issued by Circle, a regulated US financial technology company. Every USDC is redeemable one-for-one for a dollar, and the backing reserves are held in cash and short-dated US Treasuries, largely inside the Circle Reserve Fund managed by BlackRock. Circle publishes monthly reserve reports attested by an independent accounting firm.

That regulatory posture is USDC’s defining trait. Where other stablecoins compete on ubiquity, USDC competes on transparency — which has made it the preferred dollar token for businesses, DeFi protocols and anyone who wants an auditable reserve trail.

How the USDC peg works

Circle mints USDC when verified customers deposit dollars and burns it on redemption, so supply expands and contracts with real dollar flows. Arbitrage does the day-to-day work: any discount to $1 gets bought and redeemed, any premium gets minted into and sold.

The peg’s strength rests on the reserves being liquid and the redemption window staying open. USDC has deviated briefly during acute stress, but the mint-and-redeem loop has consistently pulled it back to a dollar.

Native USDC across chains: Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon

USDC is issued natively on many networks rather than existing as a single token that gets bridged around. Native USDC on Solana, Base, Arbitrum or Polygon is minted by Circle on that chain — it is not a wrapped IOU. Older “bridged” variants (often shown as USDC.e) still circulate on some networks, and they are not the same asset, which matters when an exchange or protocol accepts only the native issue.

Practically, the chains differ in cost and feel. Solana and Base settle in seconds for fractions of a cent, which suits payments. Arbitrum and Polygon offer cheap access to their DeFi ecosystems. Ethereum mainnet, where USDC liquidity is historically deepest, charges the most gas per transfer.

One operational detail: holding USDC on a chain also means holding a pinch of that chain’s gas token to move it — SOL on Solana, ETH on Base and Arbitrum, POL on Polygon. A wallet full of dollars with zero gas is temporarily stuck, so keep a small native balance wherever your USDC lives.

Choosing a network — or letting the swap do it

If you are depositing to an exchange or paying a specific recipient, match their network exactly; native USDC on the wrong chain will not arrive at an address that only monitors another one. If you are simply holding dollars, cheaper chains make every subsequent move less costly.

CryptoRoute routes USDC on Solana, Base, Arbitrum and Polygon, with the live list always visible in the widget’s chain selector. Because settlement is intent-based, you can go from USDC on one chain directly to a different asset on a different chain — the routing is handled inside a single swap.

Why swap USDC non-custodially on CryptoRoute

A custodial swap means your dollars sit in someone else’s wallet mid-trade. CryptoRoute never takes that position: you send USDC from a wallet you control, solvers on NEAR Intents fill the swap, and the output settles on-chain to the address you specify. No account, no KYC checkpoint, no platform balance that can be frozen or withheld.

Intent-based settlement also sidesteps traditional bridge risk — there is no lock-and-mint contract holding your USDC hostage while a wrapped copy floats elsewhere. Each swap either completes and pays out, or your funds return to your refund address, and both outcomes are verifiable in a block explorer.

To be clear on one point: using a no-KYC service does not remove your obligation to follow the tax and reporting rules that apply where you live.
